Interestingly enough, it seems that during the 1960’s, and you can draw your own conclusions here, women’s underwear started to change followed over time by the men’s. The garment industry began to see a growing demand for more attractive undergarments that were as functional as the more cumbersome and intimidating bras and girdles of the good old days but where lighter, smaller and distinctly more feminine and a new era in lingerie was born.
New fabrics and styles began to come on the scene and today attractive lingerie, thankfully, is considered the standard in both women’s and men’s underwear. Now even the everyday underwear that most of us have is much more visually, if you will, appealing than it was even 40 years ago accented usually with lingerie for occasions when we want to feel and or look special.
So What is Lingerie?
Generally speaking, lingerie consists of the fancier underwear or garments that often seem more decorative than functional. These fancier garments tend to be made of a variety of higher quality materials that have an emphasis on being pleasing to the touch as well as to the eye.
As a matter of fact, lingerie is so common today that it is very difficult to know what plain old underwear is and what is lingerie and in many cases what is the difference is between underwear and outerwear. The beauty of lingerie is that it has become both.
As a rule of thumb, underwear tends to have a more generous cut, wider waist band and often made of cotton with function combined with comfort and practicality being the desired result rather than visual attractiveness. Although today the combination of colors and new fabrics allows for both function and attractiveness in most undergarments.
What has Lingerie Done for the World?
Let’s face it; lingerie is designed for sex appeal. It has the ability to draw others to us while making us feel better about ourselves. In broad, pardon the pun, terms it has opened the door for women in particular to feel more at home with their sexuality. Lingerie has freed women to have the ability to look and feel sexy regardless of the outer clothing worn. Being free of large cotton panties, uncomfortable bras and confining girdles has allowed many women to enjoy their bodies like never before.
